TOUJOURS FRANCE IN 2010!

Bonjour !

I am so pleased to be able to write this month that we are currently planning for 2010, with some exciting new tours on the agenda! In view of the recent financial events, we are very grateful that our loyal clients (yes that's you!) are still not only travelling, but choosing to travel with us to France. Thank you for your continuing support - it is something we never take for granted!

The first tour I am really excited about - our first collaboration between the wonderful Si Italy and Toujours France . I am definately writing this in as one that I will escort personally as I have always wanted to go to this part of Italy - and I think you all know by now how I love the barge cruises!! The tour will consist of a week in Northern Italy - including the stunning Dolomites and Lake Garda - and a week on the "Impressioniste" in Burgundy, finishing in Paris. The tour will depart 20th September. Either Sandra or Linda from Si Italy will escort the tour with me and they are just wonderful tour managers. I would like to stress that those of you who have travelled with us previously on the Belle Epoque, could still consider this tour as the Impressioniste is offering a very different itinerary including Beaune and Dijon, some fabulous wineries and village markets.

GFC Tours
Forgive the facetious name – but yes it does stand for Global Financial Crisis!! We have decided we need to consider those of you that would love to be travelling next year, but have to take their budget into consideration more than usual. So we will be scheduling a “Provence & the Cote d’Azur” GFC tour and an “Enchanting Paris” GFC tour.

This means that we will offer these tours with some of the more expensive highlights replaced by more economical ones, eg instead of dining at our 2 star Michelin restaurant, we would choose an excellent local alternative. The accommodation will be all three star hotels instead of three and four star as we offer now. So the content and quality of these tours will not be compromised, it will just consist of more economical options! This will bring the price of these tours down and hopefully be of more interest to certain of our clients in 2010!!   PS. The name will NOT really be "GFC tour" - this is just for your interest to identify them from our regular tours, at present!!

Changes to “Enchanting Paris & Barging through Burgundy”:
This tour will now be “Enchanting Paris” only – ie a 6 day tour focussing entirely on the magical highlights of the City of Lights, including wonderful historic walking tours exploring hidden corners and secrets of the stunning capital, with our qualified historian. Of course, if you wish to take a barge cruise in conjunction with this tour, that will still be possible – we will simply book each cabin on an ad hoc basis on the barge you want, instead of chartering the entire barge for a group. Please comment on whether this tour would interest you.

Mothers & Daughters
This tour will be an opportunity for mothers & daughters to have a trip of a lifetime together. It is specifically designed for girls doing Year 10, 11 or 12 French and who don’t feel ready to leave Mum or Dad yet for an extended French exchange. This will be run during the mid-year school holidays, and includes a stay in a French farmhouse for a week in Provence, exploring the local history, markets, restaurants etc while doing French immersion lessons each day and meeting local residents with whom they can practice their French. Meanwhile the mums can relax, sunbake, shop, walk and ride around the local countryside while the girls are working - and of course enjoy the excursions with their girls! Several days French immersion in another rural location and a few days in Paris to make up the two week tour, are also part of the plan.

Finally, before I go on to other things, I am pleased to announce that the l'Occitane hamper that was the prize for our survey last month, is going to Meryl Ebenreuter. Congratulations Meryl!

LET'S GO ARMCHAIR TRAVELLING IN FRANCE!

Instead of writing an article on a particular region this month, I am going to instead give you some wonderful websites with which to do a little armchair travelling!! Some of them are sites that highlight hotels and so on that we experience on our tours – but others are simply new discoveries through which you can lose yourself in Francophilia for an hour or two!!

Hotel George V, Paris  Explore this DREAM of a hotel – the fabulous George V!!

Especially for Francophiles  This site is really worth checking out and going back to regularly – all sorts of interesting news and articles from English speakers living in France.

Incredible Shoes!!  I just had to put this in!! It is probably the grooviest site I have ever come across – and heaven for the “Imelda Marcoses” amongst us!! Love the way you can look at the shoes from every angle!!

Chateau Frontenac, Paris  This is the lovely hotel we stay in on our tours - newly refurbished!

Relais Bosquet  Proving that 3 star accommodation in Paris can still be charming and reasonably priced!!

Les Ombres Restaurant  We have recently discovered this restaurant and will be trying it on our next trip – stay tuned for our report!!

Beautiful Images of Paris  Whoever this girl is, she has taken some of the most beautiful photos of Paris that I have seen for a long time! A huge selection – transport yourself!

Luscious Linens  Oh how I love to shop!! Have a look at these BEAUTIFUL linens…..

Intimate Interiors  and these gorgeous interiors.....

OKAY, OKAY, SORRY GENTLEMEN!! Here’s one for you – and you ladies who love planes as much as I do…..
AIRBUS  Have fun exploring the new Airbus A380!!

Magnifique Properties  Looking for a holiday shack in France? Oh la la – have a look at these!!

L'Oustau de Baumaniere  one of the restaurants we visit in Provence - and gorgeous boutique hotel

L'Hotel du Poete  This is our favourite boutique hotel in Provence, so naturally we stay there on our tours… and they have a delightful website!

Chateau de Bagnols  This definitely one of the most stunning chateaux hotels in France!

Something very funny to finish off!   If you are more pro-French than the “other side”… this You Tube sketch is hilarious!!

WHO WAS ROLAND GARROS?

ROLAND GARROS TENNIS TOURNAMENT (FRENCH OPEN) is coming up very soon (May 24th - June 7th). Do you know who Roland Garros actually was?

Roland Garros is most well known today for having a tennis club and tournament named after him, but not many people remember that he was an ace fighter pilot in World War One. Even before the war, Garros became known as an exhibition flyer, and in 1913 was the first Frenchman to fly non-stop across the Mediterranean. During the war, Garros invented the forward-facing machine gun (up until then pilots had only been able to fire ineffectually at each other with rifles or pistols), an innovation that was promptly stolen by the Germans when Garros’ plane was shot down behind enemy lines. He escaped from his POW camp by the simple expedient of walking out of the main gate wearing a German uniform. After a quick refresher course he went straight back to his beloved flying, but was finally killed just five weeks before the Armistice, at the age of 36, shot down by a Fokker D-7 operating the very machine gun system he had invented.

WE'RE OFF AGAIN!

I am off to France on May 15th to do our “Spectacular South West” tour with Ian Parmenter. As usual I am madly exercising and eating wisely before departure to make up for all the yummy food and wine we will enjoy over there!! I must say the great thing about this tour is that while on the barge, we have lots of opportunity to ride and walk, which makes me feel a little less guilty about all this delicious consumption!!

Stay tuned for a new selection of images, from our upcoming tours, in our photo gallery on the website when we get back in mid-June! Have you had a look at our photo gallery? This will add to your armchair travelling too! www.toujoursfrance.com.au

Finally, please don't forget to sign your friends up for our newsletter if they are interested in France!

See you next month after my return!
